Getting a Lost Pet back Home
Because we have so many pets not making it home, I wrote
this paper to aid people. This paper is a good aid even before
a pet becomes lost. I hope you will hand it out for lost and
found and adoptions.
Getting a Lost Pet back Home: A picture can
be a helpful aid in getting a pet back home. Found pets (Head
and shoulder shot only). Leave sex out of pet description. Ask
questions don’t give answers. Is tail long or short; what color
are the feet; what sex is Pet? Are there warts? Etc. Pets react
to their name. Even with a picture of found pet, you can keep
them out of the wrong hands.
Lost and Found pets on the internet in Utah: Check KSL.com,
Lost and Found, in both livestock and announcements. Under
livestock check Shelters and Rescue -“found pets for adoption”
(sometimes you will not see a description for pet. Click on pet
and other found pets will sometimes appear).
Also see (Flealess Market) Lost Pets international-see under
Utah; also Petfinder; Pet Harbor; Craigslist; and Tradio &
Trading Post. Keep checking these sights. Check back in time
for found pets.
There are a lot of Public and Private Shelters and Rescue
agencies in your area of Utah. Try to contact them all and
leave info: Pictures-Date lost or found-Breed-Sex-Color of
pet-Collar, etc. Check both the lost areas and the adoption
areas in the shelters. Shelters have dog and cat rooms not
accessible to the public, ask about these rooms. Check shelter
books and log pet in book. Ask each shelter what their policies
are. Some shelters only hold a pet for 3 days and then the pet
is either put up for adoption or destroyed.
The shelters have a hard time contacting all the people, Due to
our shelters being so over populated. Keep checking the
shelters and books, the internet ads’, news papers. The Vets
and store windows. Post signs with pictures and info in and
around the neighborhood where pet was lost and any areas pet is
said to be sighted.
Lost pet owners with an old Ph# on tag; see if Ph# has been
handed out again and make contact; if not, see if operator can
transfer old # to your new #, fee may be requested. For Rabies
tags, contact vet with new Ph#. For found pets with a tag with
a Disconnected Ph#, try a reverse search in the white pages on
internet with Ph# to locate address. If address comes up 74 P
street, visit address, or try 73, 75, 78 etc. Make contact with
neighbors of found pet. They may have info on the owner of the
found pet.
There are two kinds of microchips and a different scanner for
each. Unless a Universal scanner is being used, the microchip
doesn’t always show up. Keep updated ID tags on your pets as
well as using the Microchip. (Have found pets scanned). Pets
end up across town and out of town due to people picking them
up.
Clothes and collars are taken off and added. The color white
can be mistaken for tan, the color brown for rust, and so on. A
pet can be found miles and miles away from home. Check all pets
that might fit your pets’ description.
It can take months and months before a pet is found. Don’t give
up to easily.
Please keep a list of dates and places you posted your ads’, so
once pet is found, all the ads can be removed (This is
important, because this will help put faces and descriptions
with other Lost and Found pets and get them home too).
Best Wishes
S. Bohlke
